Known by many for the Rose Bowl and Rose Parade, these are two remnant reminders of the wealth this city enjoyed in the past; in the early 1900's it had the highest per capita income of any city in the U.S. as it had become the winter-home location of choice for wealthy easterners like the Gambles of Proctor and Gamble, Wrigleys of chewing gum fame, the Buschs of Anheuser-Busch, and many more. This wealth translated into a city that enjoyed cultural riches well beyond cities of comparable size, and yet because of its location in the "wild" developing West, the atmosphere and local lifestyle were relaxed (at least by Eastern standards of the day). All of that to say, that this may be a small city (especially in comparison to the LA region as a whole), but because of its opulent roots Pasadena has a lot to offer for those interested in design and architecture; much of which is historic and "conservative" but surprises await.
