Art inspired by landscape architecture and design | 10/06/07
The Event was a great success, only minutes after Mars Bar opened its doors, the space was filled with the buzz of local artists, landscape architects and designers. String lights lined the sod-covered sidewalk directing the incoming flow through the doors where they were presented with a layout of the exhibits and a schedule for the media show. People meandered through the Front Gallery to explore the art work ranging from photography portraying the American Landscape in Bryan Schutmaat's eyes, poetic mixed media works from local Designer Zach Tanner, and Landscape Architect Christian Lemon's sculptural work constructed from bamboo, wood burl and Japanese maple.

Following the painted contours on the ground, people were led to the Back Gallery where Steven MacDonald's embroidered cityscapes lit up the wall. DJ Fletcher who donated his time and energy to the event spun the evening into a positive upbeat ambiance. People were drawn to the Box Gallery where the entire floor was covered with grass. Bringing the landscape indoors, it provided a wonderful space for people to take of their shoes and sit on the ground. Above them hung Daniel Newman's beautifully textured details of the Urban Landscape and Mark Likosky's photo documentation of Resort Development.

Outdoors, people relaxed under space heaters glancing up at the huge projection screen that rotated work including Willet Moss, founder of CMG Landscape Architecture, a silent film by recent graduates, Astrid Diehl and Rusty Lamer, and an animated landscape by Adam Cruces.

The busy crew of IDEA!ography stood guard at the several projectors and cameras filming the night and providing an amazing visual display despite technical difficulties. Strings of famous quotes about Space and Landscape Design led one's eye around the corner into the back lot which had been transformed into an urban oasis by Wayward Plants whose adopt-a-plant program turned many a green thumb on that night. Noise activated lights lit up impromptu box seating created using recycled materials of milk crates, corrugated plastic and cardboard. People sat and congregated here to share stories and watch the projection series on the exposed wall above. 360 Vodka sponsored the event, donating $1 from every drink to our local charity, San Francisco Park's Trust.
