Elisa Markes-Young Textiles Narratives of Creation and Destruction
The work of textile artist Elisa Markes-Young has an organic quality that is tactile, irregular and beautifully expressive. A Poland native currently residing in Perth, Markes-Young uses natural fibers to create works that explore themes from nature like germination and the patterns of growth and decay. The result is at times rough, but manages to accentuate the complexity and fragility of nature. For Markes-Young the themes she explores are taken from her environment to create a visual language that stems from emotional response.
The imperfection and rawness of the execution bring a quirky uniqueness and timeless beauty to the seemingly regular structures - a slightly unhappy leaf, grafted branch or broken limbs are all characters in an endless cyclic narrative of creation and destruction.
