Overall the student work was very developed and considered, especially given the size and complexity of the site, and the fact that there was not a prescribed program. While certain elements are shared between many of the projects, each student had a unique take on the program, remediation process and site development.

SITE PLAN
Erin's project addressed the need for simultaneous use of the site; allowing access over the contaminated land while remediation is taking place. The solution consists of a series of raised platforms that move over the landscape incrementally according to the planting/remediation cycles, as well as an overhead mezzanine structure of walkways that connect the buildings to the platforms and landscape.
The program for the site incorporated the existing uses: an expanded swap meet and high school which would incorporate environmental studies into the curriculum. The program of the site would also be expanded to include a transportation hub, playing fields/courts, community center and public plaza.

SITE PLAN & PHASING
Catie envisioned the site as a combination of public and private uses. Her plan places housing units along the east west streets, adjacent to the existing neighborhoods, with a large park occupying the center portion of the site extending from edge to edge. The private yards merge visually with the park by use of ha-has which create a physical barrier without visually dividing the space.
Contaminated soil is excavated and mounded into a large hill planted for remediation with sunflowers creating a visual landscape centerpiece for the site. An observation deck rises above the mound to provide views over the site and to the site and city and mountains beyond.
To top it off, Catie used Pez and pirate figures on her models… who can't on board with that?!

SITE PLAN

Taking her cue from the moving systems of the rail car maintenance facilities, Catherine’s approach to programming and organizing the site was to overlay the movements of the site from the past and present.
Merging the school and community functions with the movement and flexibility of the former maintenance facility, the concept is for a system of modular units and an infrastructure for the movement and storage of the units. This infrastructure serves as an organizing spine for the site, extending as a promenade from the eastern commercial edge through the school site.
Catherine’s concept is wrapped around the idea of an educational system that is adaptable to the needs of students and a site that can adapt to the needs of the surrounding community.
