Roberto Burle Marx
Influential 20th century Brazilian landscape architect
Following up on our post yesterday about contemporary Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, we have complied some links to websites that feature images of his works. One of the sites is in Portuguese and another in German, and both of those are somewhat difficult to navigate, but the effort is well worth while. Unfortunately, there are few images on the Burle Marx firm website (Burle Marx & Cia. continues today lead by Marx's partner Haruyoshi Ono who joined the firm in 1968), but there is a little bit of history.
"Roberto Burle Marx is internationally known as one of the most important landscape architects of the 20th century.

"An artist of multiple facets, besides being a landscape designer he was also a remarkable painter, sculptor, singer, and jewelry designer, with a sensibility that is shown throughout his work."

Firm: Burle Marx & Cia.
Visit: Sítio Roberto Burle Marx (via Maria Brazil)
Link: Burle Marx (via Brazil Gov't - Secretaria de Estado da Fazenda do Espírito Santo)
Link: Roberto Burle Marx: The Missing Link (via Hannes Loipetsberger thesis website)
Reference: Roberto Burle Marx: The Lyrical Landscape (L+L)

Burle Marx is perhaps best know for his work in Brazil's modern capital, Brasilia.

arte e paisagem
there is an excelent book with some of burle marx speeches called "Art and Landscape" ("Arte e Paisagem"). It is very elucidative about his work. It was released by Nobel editions in 1987. Unfortunately, i am not sure it is available except in used books stores.

wish the africans would learn from him
Burle's works are an inspiration that am sure we in Africa feel. The works viewed in whichever sense(paintings or in Print) are interesting and they remind us of our beautiful lands that we should embrace entirely here in Africa!

A VISIT TO BURLE MARX.
In 1973, a group of friends traveled from Caracas as guests to Roberto Burle Marx's home "El Sitio". The group included as much as I can recall, Architects Enrique Siso and Daniel Shaw. Landscape Architects Fernando Tabora, John Stoddart and Orlando Comas (the three of them had experience working with Roberto in projects in Venezuela.) It was a wonderful week in which Roberto took us to visit projects, his Studio and long walks thru the gardens of "El Sitio" and his plant collections. Roberto will always be remembered as the man who influenced modern landscape architecture, and influenced those landscape architects in South America who would be carrying out great designs in the years to come. No doubt that Stoddart, Tabora and Comas would be amoung that group.

Burle Marx's link with East Africa
I met Roberto Burle Marx through Peter Greensmith who was the other foremost tropical landscape architect and plantsman based in Nairobi, Kenya. I was previliged to visit and stay at El Sitio in 1992 and spend a wonderful time in the library, the museum and gardens of course. He was keen to incorporate African themes and plants in his art and landscapes in subsequent works as he said. But time and energy were obviously not on his side. I asled him why at his age he was still building that huge new edifice at El Sitio then (as was, incidentally, Greensmith who died at about the same time in Nairobi). His response: "Posterity, my dear lad, posterity". He inspired my friend Aisha Murtala Mohammed who had accompanied me there. She has now established three notable botanic gardens and conservatoria in Lagos and Abuja, Nigeria! I have some pre-digital photos with him in the gardens. Precious. I would love to know what happened to the house which was under construction in 1992, please anyone. Also who or what weblink could I contact to get images of around El Sitio Muchas gracias. email: langdenc@yahoo.com
