One Small Step
One giant step for eco-friendly back to school gear
So you've got a kid, and you want to be "green," but let's face it, this is easier said than done. You have plastic this-and-that, one-use items, all of those school supplies, disposable lunch bags... etc., etc., etc. Sourcing environmentally responsible children's products is a royal pain!

What if one day your kid's tree-hugging school requires that you send waste-free lunches?! This is what happened to Renata Bodon who found it challenging to find safe and high-quality reusable lunch ware. Fortunately for you, Renata decided not only to solve her problem, but yours as well.

Meet One Small Step--your one stop shop offering a bevy of waste-free, lead-free, BPA-free, Phthalate-free, and PVC-free lunch and school supplies as well as items for babies and toddlers. And to top it off, One Small Step not only selects items with an eye for design, but also donates 10% of their gross returns to non-profits and partnering schools... you can even register your fave.

Summer Sales.
Retail therapy for a little less coin.
There are some kickin summer sales going on out there. West Elm is a retailer we want to hate but can't help but love. West Elm has a rather large inventory of discounted merchandise at the moment.

Design Within Reach is currently hosting a nice summer sale. In addition to their normal selection of overstocks and discontinued items, they have a limited time page where certain merchandise is discounted.

For a limited time, of course.

There are bargains to be had at the Moma store as well. While the selection isn't quite as large, I found something I just couldn't live without. This spice grinder is coming home to live with me.

Edit
Reinventing modern classics, vintage and period furniture
As long as we're on the subject of retail furniture stores, here's one at the other end of the Golden State.

Edit Furnishings doesn't appear to have any exclusive designs, but they do offer an interesting collection of furniture, objects, lighting and art. They are located in Newark, a town in the (south east) San Francisco Bay Area.

notNeutral
Home decor and accessories from Rios Clementi Hale Studios
notNeutral is... well... not neutral. And not ashamed of it. A division of Los Angeles multi-disciplinary design firm Rios Clementi Hale Studios, notNeutral offers "confident, hip and streetwise products that express individuality and choice." It's kind of like the anti-Pottery Barn.

Their products offer a broad range of dinnerware, pillows, vases, children’s furniture, and home accessories of all kinds. It's funky groovy stuff, as if four decades of design and style have collided... and it works.

They have their own retail store on Melrose in Los Angeles, a web store, and are carried by specialty retailers.

Elsewares
Fun products from independent designers
Elsewares is a new breed of design catalog based in New York that features the works of independent designers. We like their product assortment in a ReadyMade/Dwell sort of way. Also, when you go through their checkout process, you are able to vote for a non-profit group that you would like Elsewares to contribute to. At the end of each quarter, the group with the most votes will receive a portion of Elsewares' profits. Nice.

Some of the products we like are the Super Bowl by Elasticco and the Bottle Opener/Fridge Magnent from Suck UK.

Target Practice
"The Michael Graves-Target partnership is the very model of a successful designer-retailer collaboration. But getting there was an occasionally bumpy ride."
An an interview with Michael Graves by Linda Tishler in Fast Company about his partnership with Target to create an affordable line of designer products. The arrangement with Graves paved the way for Target's future collaborations with other designers and making Target the budget outlet for designer products.

Chiasso
Inspired design for the home.
The other day, we received a Chiasso catalog in the mail. We hadn't heard of them before so we must've received their catalog through one of our design magazine subscriptions. Some of their product looks pretty good. We're guessing it's all private label merchandise similar to IKEA since we didn't see or notice any "designer brands" in their catalog or on their website. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Has anyone ever ordered from them? Which piece did you order and how was the quality? Their prices are fairly reasonable so if the quality is good, we just might have to look into them a bit further.
