Welcome to the Archives!
2004 called — it misses its sidebar blogroll.
Welcome to the archives of Land+Living—a small corner of the internet from back when “weblog” still felt like the right word and discovery meant following blogrolls instead of algorithms. Originally published from 2004 to 2010, this collection captures an early wave of online design and architecture, emerging alongside peers like Apartment Therapy, Treehugger, Design Sponge, Mocoloco, and more—a time when the conversation around how we live, build, and design was just finding its footing on the web. What you’ll find here is a time capsule: ideas, inspirations, and observations from a slower, more curious internet. It’s been brought back mostly as-is—with just a few light UI changes—so feel free to wander, explore, and enjoy a look at where it all started.

Land+Living Maps
The world is ours!

Officially announcing Land+Living Maps; the world as we see it.

It is a work in progress with many more place marks to come... yup, there are lots of holes in our map. But eventually no matter where you find yourself in the world, L+L will have your back. A lofty goal perhaps, but that's how we roll. Oh yeah, and you'll see embedded maps accompanying many of our posts from here on out--not to mention the maps we've added to archived posts as well--so you can see where stuff is located, and what's around it.

Happy exploring!

George Yu
A letter from Thom Mayne
We debated over whether we should make this letter public or not. It is an unusual letter to "print" on our site, but George Yu is an unusual person.

A few of us here at L+L had the pleasure and honor to have had George as an instructor and, briefly, as a boss. What makes George so special is that, even though he has a fantastic abundance of "starchitect" talent, he remains a super-friendly, kind, down-to-earth guy who helps out, chats over a beer, and plays roller hockey whenever he has time. This combination of talent, success, and humility is very rare in our profession, in any profession, and we would like to salute George for being an absolute class act. Thank you, Thom, for emphasizing this point.

Newsweek - Net Results
Look, Ma! We're in Newsweek!
Being a web publication, I suppose we're a bit jaded when it comes to seeing Land+Living listed on another website... like earlier this week when we were listed among A Web Design Dozen in Newsweek's design feature. Admittedly cool, but we just don't have time to jump up and down every time we see our name on the web.

But there is something about seeing your name in print... there it was today when I opened up the latest hard copy issue of Newsweek (the one with Johnny Depp right on the cover) to the Design 2006 spread.

When it comes to print, there is only so much space... so we were thrilled to be listed as one of only six websites that Newsweek chose for its print edition... right up top no less! With a screen shot! Good thing we got decked out in our new duds first... mom will be so proud.

Congrats to our compadres who were also splashed with some ink:

Branching out: DesignBOT
Department of design culture edited by Adriean Koleric
We're amping it up L+L a bit here with a slight update to our look and feel, and the addition of a new Branch to expand our offerings.

Edmonton, Alberta based designer Adriean Koleric has been a contributor at Land+Living for some time now - and we are pleased today to announce that DesignBOT, Adriean's design blog, has joined the Land+Living network! DesignBOT will bring turn up the funk on L+L and expand our horizons with more design lifestyle, pop culture and fashion focused content.

Note: Some DesignBOT content will appear on the L+L homepage along with the usual L+L fare.

Welcome Adriean
L+L welcomes Adriean Koleric
If you've been reading L+L for a while, I'm pretty sure you're familiar with the work of Canadian designer, Adriean Koleric. Back in May 2005, Adriean contacted us to tell us about his Edith Mailbox and I've been a fan of his work ever since. I look forward to reading Adriean's contributions to L+L.

Adriean also maintains his own blog, designBot.

This is the summary field
This is the main text area. The HTML preceeding this text is for the thumbnail image. On the "New Entry" screen, the "Add Thumbnail" and "Links" buttons automatically add HTML to the post (the buttons do not show up on this Edit screen, only on the New Entry screen). Thumbnail images should be either 200 or 250 pixels wide and be named similar to "subjectofyourblog_thumb.jpg". Only one image is allowed in the Body Text portion of the blog. In order to add an image, you need to go to the "File Upload" screen.

The HTML tags above make a double break ("br" stands for break, one "br" tag will make a new line, two "br" tags make a double line break for a new paragraph).

We place the primary links at the end of this text section, though you can add links (here is what the HTML looks like: links) into the text as well if necessary. Use the "Links" button to have the HTML written automatically.

Welcome Lorenza
New contributor at Land+Living
In L+L's teething months, an architecture student contacted us to inquire further about one of our posts. We stayed in touch sporadically, and just two months ago we posted one of her student projects on L+L.

And now, because of that email about that early post, we have invited her to join us as a contributor; please welcome Lorenza Casini! Her inaugural post is related, of course, to that first email contact.

Inundated
This last week has been a busy one for us outside of Land+Living, not to mention the obvious distraction of hurricane Katrina and her catastrophic aftermath. Fortunately, none of us here at Land+Living has been directly affected by proximity to the disaster.

Also needless to say, there has been no shortage of news coverage of the disaster. Our good friends at Archinect have done a great job of aggregating information on the web related to the hurricane in addition to posting places for people in architecture related fields or studies to find opportunities. We highly recommend visiting their emergency information page to stay abreast of things.

Guest blog at Design Public
Land+Living was invited to post for Design Public's "children and design" blogging event
When Design Public, an online purveyor of contemporary home products, invited us to participate in their current blogging event, we were happy to oblige. The guys over at Design Public are super cool, the offer great products, and they have their own blog as part of the site.

Their current blogging event entitled "Baby Blog-a-polooza" is themed around children and design, and they have invited parenting bloggers and design bloggers to provide their outlook on the topic. To go along with the theme I wrote a bit about the childhood experiences that shaped my views about design and the environment. Take a look around...

Clippings
Quick links from around the web
In the spirit of Slinks, Meta Moco, and blogosphere wanderlust, we bring you Clippings, the L+L way of sharing random articles, discussions, and product posts in a quick format sort of way. When a news article warrants a mention but not necessarily a full blog post, look for it here. If there's an interesting discussion going on at one of the many design/architecture related forums, we'll clip it in here. And if one of our fellow bloggers gets the scoop on some great furniture porn, we'll throw it in here as well.

Put your hands together and give a warm welcome...
New contributors at Land+Living
There has been a frenzy of offline activity here at Land+Living during the past couple of weeks. We have been hard at work planning for the future, and part of that plan includes the addition of new contributors.

Over the past 14 months, we have worked hard to establish the base and tone of Land+Living and now we feel that it is time to add some new voices and viewpoints... and so that you know exactly who is saying what, we have just added a by-line to each post as well… see, it says "posted by James" up there.

A few new contributors will be making their Land+Living debut in the next couple of months. Please join Anthony and me in welcoming our L+L newbies (like Deborah) who are sure to add their own unique perspectives to Land+Living! Bios will be uploaded as each contributor comes online.

Do you have what it takes?
Join the Land+Living team
We want you... but only if you're good.

We are looking for a creative person with an eye for design and a knack for finding the goods. What will you get in return? You get to hitch your wagon to our kick ass, critically acclaimed design web journal. And, you might even make a few bucks (emphasis on few) in the process.

If you are interested in being a contributing writer to Land+Living, contact us with a brief introduction to tell us why you think that you are up to the task. Good luck.

Technical Difficulty
Please stand by...
We have been experiencing some technical problems today... more accurately, our web host has had some trouble, thus, Land+Living has been offline at times today.

While we've had more down time than we'd like in the past, it has never been this bad. So, please accept our apologies if you have had trouble reaching us. We're going to try to remember why we extended our hosting agreement...

Land+Living in _SCAPE
Land+Living profiled in the ASLA Minnesota Chapter journal
Land+Living is all the rage amongst landscape architects in Minnesota, don't ya know. We've featured some design from the land-of-a-thousand-lakes before on Land+Living (see references below) and now the favor has been returned.

Adam Regn Arvidson, ASLA wrote us up in the premier issue of _SCAPE the journal of the Minnesota Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects. It's a nice little article in the "In Other Words" section that captures the spirit of Land+Living quite well. Thanks Adam!

Site Mods
Ch-ch-ch-changes
You might not have noticed but we've been making some small changes to the site here at L+L. We've added pagination to our main pages (finally!) and recently fixed a bug that was causing comments to be submitted multiple times. We've also made a few changes to the database so hopefully pages will load a little bit faster. I'm pretty sure things are running smoothly but if you happen to notice any weirdness, give us a holler and let us know, or simply comment below. As always, thanks for stopping by!

¾ of a Year
9+1: picks from the first 9 months
We just realized that Land+Living has been around for more than nine months... totally missed our half year mark, and we'll surely miss our anniversary as well. For some reason this feels like a good time to look back at where we have been and mark the passing of time.

To commemorate the occasion, we have somewhat arbitrarily chosen nine (+1) past blogs, not a "best of" list per se... but, whatever... here it is...

Drum roll, please...............

Will you still love us when we're incredibly humongoid giant stars?
Land+Living in the New York Times
We've hit the big time now. Will you still love us when we're in our "carbohydrate, sequined-jumpsuit, young-girls-in-white-cotton-panties, waking-up-in-a-pool-of-your-own-vomit, bloated-purple-dead-on-a-toilet phase?" Because, you know, it's all just a matter of time now.

Land+Living gets a quick mention in an article by Lockhart Steele about design blogs in the New York Times Home & Garden section. And it has already gone to our heads. So, what are you waiting for? Go read it already!

EDIT - Oh, and we should mention, while the article implies that our focus is landscape design, you can see that we cover a wide range of topics. That said, we are dedicated to covering landscape design, objects and ideas.

Where have we been?
Up to our ankles in brown stuff and white stuff
Sorry for the unannounced sabbatical. So, we have some catching up to do here at L+L... and one of us has some plumbing to replace. Ah, the joys of home ownership.

The other of us has no such excuse... just snow blind from snowboarding in the Eastern Sierra... and now drawn to Snow Design and all things frozen and icy. Hmmm... Julie Snow Architects...

Well, at least one excuse makes for better images than the other.

Back to our regularly scheduled programming soon... after we shake the brown and white stuff.

Happy Festivus from us to you
It's a festive... uh... Festivus here at Land+Living, and we'd like to share it with you!
HAPPY FESTIVUS!

Today is Festivus, and just before we take off for some Festivus r+r, we would like to share in the traditions of the season with you, our dear Land+Living readers.

Both of us here at Land+Living would like to thank you for visiting our site. We hope you like what you have seen, and please continue to visit as we grow and evolve. And, of course, please free to contact us with any suggestions or tips. And to our design blog compatriots, thank you all for your support and professionalism. Happy Festivus to you all! And now... on with the Festivus for the rest of us.....

Site Updates
Some things happening at L+L
We've made some small changes to our site over the past few days. Earlier this week, we added a link to Kinja, a "weblog portal" that allows you to view numerous headlines from your favorite weblogs all in one convenient location. Links to other design websites we read have also been added (thanks to MoCo Loco for linking to us as well!).

We have also deployed search functionality to the site. At this time, it's fairly primitive (we're not quite up to snuff with Google's engineers) but it offers basic keyword searching that, for the most part, returns relevent results. We're aware of a few minor shortcomings (ok, bugs) with our implementation and we're working to correct them.

Additionally, we've started working on a redesign of the site that will hopefully get us up to date with current web standards (CSS, XHTML, etc.) as well as having our site render the same across most major browsers. We're also looking into adding some enhanced content as well. Look for these changes in the coming weeks (ok, probably months).

If you happen to come across a great modern landscape design, know of a great architecture firm (or better yet, architecture student) working on a fantastic project, or simply find a product you'd like us to feature, drop us a line and let us know.

As always, thanks for your emails and most of all, thanks for visiting.

Been kinda slow around here lately....
We've been out "Living" on the "Land". Get it? Har har.
Sorry for the lack of posts the last few days. While one half of us was out of commission due to food poisoning from some improperly cooked chicken quesadillas (shame on you, Islands!), the other half was out backcountry camping and hiking for snowboard turns in the Hoover Wilderness (sort of near Yosemite for those of you not familiar with California's High Sierra). Anyhow, we're back and feeling much better so we'll have some cool stuff to show you in the next few days. In the meantime, I've included a few shots from my trip. Post Islands dinner photos NOT included ;-)

Ok, back to the design-related posts now....

We've got comments
Finally....
Well, now that we've been online for just about two months, we decided it was about time to turn on the ability to receive reader comments for our entries. In order to submit a comment, all you need to submit is the comment itself. We ask for your name but it's not required (we'll automatically fill in "Anonymous" as your name if you chose not to include it). Also, we won't ask for your email addres, nor do we require that you provide a title. However, we'd prefer that you did, but it's up to you.

With that in mind, please keep your comments on-topic and relevent to the blog entry. Any comment that is off-topic, deemed offensive, or is thought to be spam will be removed.

If you wish to contact us, please do so via our contact form and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.

Thanks again for reading Land+Living!
