Bath
I want a Tris! If only I could spare £10,000...

Combination steam bath / sauna / shower
Ideal Standard's new Tris Sauna-cum-Steam-cum-Shower Room is a dream come true. The only downside? The price tag!

While working on a private house for a client, I have been researching into steam/shower rooms and to my delight I have been coming across some fantastic work by product designers alike.

Tris by Ideal Standard in particular has caught my attention (and the client's too!)

SPOON

Stand-up job from the UK

You know Marcel Duchamp would love to get his signature on this bad boy.

UK based Philip Watts Design breathes life into the 'loo' with a new urinal design entitled SPOON.

Finished using stove enamelling, this solid cast aluminum piece is just that...solid.

Soak It In

Stainless steel bathtubs
Looking for a bathtub that is sustainable, easy to maintain and drop dead gorgeous? Stainless steel might be just what you are looking for. Stainless steel tubs come in a variety of shapes and styles that can be paired with other materials like enamel and wood. They are a good conductor of heat, and will keep the water warmer for an extended period of time. They are also corrosion resistant and should not rust. Stainless steel tubs are not mass produced, so they can be expensive and many people opt for having them custom made to suit their needs. Stainless tubs are generally in the $7,000 to $17,000+ (US) range, which is not exactly pocket change, but if you are looking for something sustainable, durable and different it might just be worth the investment.

Lithistone

An alternative to Portland Cement
Lithistone is an environmentally friendly alternative to Portland Cement that Ryan Waxman and Brett Fitzgerald use to fabricate countertops, sinks and decorative products. Lithistone will not contribute to indoor air pollution through off-gassing because it uses natural organic high colorfast pigments from Bioshield earth pigments, and non-toxic sealers and glosses. Lithistone is made from a variety of aggregates including crushed slate, granite, quartz, sea shells, marble and limestone. Furthermore, it can be carved, cast or sculpted. Lithistone provides natural contrast to a contemporary interior.

Infinite Fitting

Cast metal basins
Infinite Fitting makes these wonderful sand-cast, hand-detailed metal basins designed by Bruce Tomb.

The design facilitates various installations, including an available wall bracket or on-countertop mounting. Available in white bronze, silicon bronze, brass or aluminum, each basin has a rough cast texture on the outside and a satin-polish on the inside.

To borrow the words of an infamous client, "quiet elegance." But in this case, we mean it - then again, so did he...

Go Tankless

The Purist Hatbox Toilet from Kohler
Toilets haven't changed too much since they evolved from the outhouse... the shape and parts are fairly standard and predictable. But this is different from anything we've seen.
Conventional cues of the traditional toilet are removed as the minimalist inspired electric toilet offers a clean aesthetic both visually and physically with its innovative tankless design. The result is a utilitarian product which provides tremendous performance yet offers unexpected beauty by turning common perceptions of what the traditional American toilet should look like upside down.
The form is nice and simple... hopefully the technology is simple enough that it won't be a maintenance nightmare. But then again, if you can afford the $2890 price tag...

The real wonder of it all is that the same company that can produce a toilet as sleek and straightforward as the Purist Hatbox also made this.

REDshowerRUM... I mean ROOM

An efficient bathroom remodel
Red glass tile wraps from floor to wall to ceiling in this efficient bathroom by husband and wife design team Adam and Lisa Christie of Portland, Oregon based Prototype Architects. The side walls are covered in waterproof cement plaster, and the fourth wall features a floor to ceiling mirror.

The entire bathroom is conceived as one continuous space, rather than little compartments. The floor surface is open and uninterrupted thanks to the wall mounted sink and toilet. Custom designed stainless steel fixtures include towel bars and shelves, and the large trough sink which is hung in front of the mirror wall and features two double-jointed kitchen faucets.

A stunningly clean and efficient space.
