Welcome Anne

George Yu

A letter from Thom Mayne
We debated over whether we should make this letter public or not. It is an unusual letter to "print" on our site, but George Yu is an unusual person.

A few of us here at L+L had the pleasure and honor to have had George as an instructor and, briefly, as a boss. What makes George so special is that, even though he has a fantastic abundance of "starchitect" talent, he remains a super-friendly, kind, down-to-earth guy who helps out, chats over a beer, and plays roller hockey whenever he has time. This combination of talent, success, and humility is very rare in our profession, in any profession, and we would like to salute George for being an absolute class act. Thank you, Thom, for emphasizing this point.

Newsweek - Net Results

Look, Ma! We're in Newsweek!
Being a web publication, I suppose we're a bit jaded when it comes to seeing Land+Living listed on another website... like earlier this week when we were listed among A Web Design Dozen in Newsweek's design feature. Admittedly cool, but we just don't have time to jump up and down every time we see our name on the web.

But there is something about seeing your name in print... there it was today when I opened up the latest hard copy issue of Newsweek (the one with Johnny Depp right on the cover) to the Design 2006 spread.

When it comes to print, there is only so much space... so we were thrilled to be listed as one of only six websites that Newsweek chose for its print edition... right up top no less! With a screen shot! Good thing we got decked out in our new duds first... mom will be so proud.

Congrats to our compadres who were also splashed with some ink:

Branching out: DesignBOT

Department of design culture edited by Adriean Koleric
We're amping it up L+L a bit here with a slight update to our look and feel, and the addition of a new Branch to expand our offerings.

Edmonton, Alberta based designer Adriean Koleric has been a contributor at Land+Living for some time now - and we are pleased today to announce that DesignBOT, Adriean's design blog, has joined the Land+Living network! DesignBOT will bring turn up the funk on L+L and expand our horizons with more design lifestyle, pop culture and fashion focused content.

Note: Some DesignBOT content will appear on the L+L homepage along with the usual L+L fare.

Soapbox @ Land+Living

Because the world NEEDS another online forum.
One of the things I like about working on the site here at L+L is reading the comments that our readers submit to the articles we post. The comment section in our Dwell post has offered some constructive criticism for Andrew Wagner and the gang over at Dwell Mag. Same holds true for the comments in our Porch House article with architect Greg La Vardera actively particpating with our readers. Needless to say, we're pretty stoked that our readers are participating and helping to make L+L a better place to visit.

In that regard, we decided we try our hand at providing a forum and see just how much more of a community we can build here at Land+Living. We're keeping it simple at first by just offering a single category for discussions but as time goes by and a community begins to take shape, we'll break it out and make things more topical.

Welcome Adriean

L+L welcomes Adriean Koleric
If you've been reading L+L for a while, I'm pretty sure you're familiar with the work of Canadian designer, Adriean Koleric. Back in May 2005, Adriean contacted us to tell us about his Edith Mailbox and I've been a fan of his work ever since. I look forward to reading Adriean's contributions to L+L.

Adriean also maintains his own blog, designBot.

Welcome Lorenza

New contributor at Land+Living
In L+L's teething months, an architecture student contacted us to inquire further about one of our posts. We stayed in touch sporadically, and just two months ago we posted one of her student projects on L+L.

And now, because of that email about that early post, we have invited her to join us as a contributor; please welcome Lorenza Casini! Her inaugural post is related, of course, to that first email contact.

Inundated

This last week has been a busy one for us outside of Land+Living, not to mention the obvious distraction of hurricane Katrina and her catastrophic aftermath. Fortunately, none of us here at Land+Living has been directly affected by proximity to the disaster.

Also needless to say, there has been no shortage of news coverage of the disaster. Our good friends at Archinect have done a great job of aggregating information on the web related to the hurricane in addition to posting places for people in architecture related fields or studies to find opportunities. We highly recommend visiting their emergency information page to stay abreast of things.

Guest blog at Design Public

Land+Living was invited to post for Design Public's "children and design" blogging event
When Design Public, an online purveyor of contemporary home products, invited us to participate in their current blogging event, we were happy to oblige. The guys over at Design Public are super cool, the offer great products, and they have their own blog as part of the site.

Their current blogging event entitled "Baby Blog-a-polooza" is themed around children and design, and they have invited parenting bloggers and design bloggers to provide their outlook on the topic. To go along with the theme I wrote a bit about the childhood experiences that shaped my views about design and the environment. Take a look around...
