I don't have any money left to fill it with food but it sure looks good
I had to confess to my wife today that I am in love with another... a stainless steel refrigerator. Ironically, I have just been talking about my on-going obsession with free standing commercial stainless refrigerators, the chunky old-school kind with multiple compartments and doors, glass a-top and solid below. And then I stumble across this beauty... if only it had big ol' pull-lever latches...

Stainless steel inside and out, this refrigerator conforms to the US Department of Energy's stringent standards for residential use - consuming less energy than a 100 watt light bulb. The styling is a wonderfully simple, with fine attention paid to the details: dual compressors, three evaporators, auto-closing hinges, exterior drawers with glazed lids for both crisper and freezer.

Set to debut this fall, we can only imagine the cost of this 'fridge considering that Sub-Zero is the Rolls Royce of refrigeration. But damn if it isn't a beauty.

We have just ordered our Pro48. Live in Southern California doing a Spanish Revival kitchen. The ice drawer is perfect - who wants water and ice on the door when you can have an ICE DRAWER -no more ice scattering across the floor. A true beautiful with form and function meeting in a grand scale. Eat your hearts out - I'm in love with a refrigerator/freezer.

I love this refrigerator! I purchased 6 of them for my new house in Las Vegas! It's wonderful and superior. Thank God for SUB ZERO! The price was wonderful too. 12,000 dollars was not costy at all!

From a technical stand point, its a great piece of engineering, no doubt about it...
But, the funny thing is that just as our waists seem to be perpetually expanding (were the fattest nation in the planet) now, so are our refrigerators. it would be nice if Sub-Zero made one half it's size.
As a nation, we also claim the the unfortunate distinction of wasting the most food. We buy too much crap (full of artificial flavorings and colorings, stabilizers, fillers and preservatives), it sits in the refrigerator and it spoils and gets thrown out, eventually.
With millions of people around the world starving to death, our conspicuous consumption, this addiction to keeping up with the Joneses and then surpassing them, (more, more, more, bigger, bigger!) in short, our GLUTTONY, is just sinful. Who the heck needs 6 behemoth refrigerators in a single family home? Not even some of the best chefs in the world have more than a one in theirs since ther's no need if you buy fresh food and consume it right the way.
Sorry but, it's VULGAR, that's what it is.

beautiful frig. The freezer is the part I love,
My wife is in a wheelchair. this freezer is easy
for her. three compartments have adjustable temperatues. the price is worth it.

I swear I saw this fridge a few months ago and it was only about 6,000. Now I look it up and it's 15 grand. ?? WTF? could i have been possibly looking at a smaller version? all i remember about where i saw it, was that I'd been looking at Wolf kitchen products. (I thought i really liked their 38" gas stove but have since decided on a smooth top electric.)

The people that are able/willing to purchase this fridge will probably not consider buying a car for that price. This is not a fridge for your average middle class peops, just like a Ferrari will most likely never be purchased by that family that owns that little house with the garden gnomes down the street. Just enjoy a hot piece of design, and try and not leave too many nose prints...

It looks like the hummer of refrigerators! With all the talk about living more simply and the not so big house once again over kill. I actually am more impressed with the fact that they make ref. drawers, 27" & 30" refrig's and they are counter depth.

Subzero are just entering the market here in Hong Kong. No person can truly state they love their kitchen unless they purchase one. Forget the cost, remortgage the house. For cash purchasers you can get them customised! I ordered mine specially fitted with a door ice/water dispenser. It also has a charger for my mobile phone, wireless internet connection with an internal webcam (so you can check from the supermarket what you forgot) and a titanium pneumatic corkscrew that opens a bottle of Bordeaux in less than two seconds! This is THE best for the best. Way to go Subzero!

Note: I would add a feature to the window in the door and make it an option to allow see through or glass reflection. Sometimes my refer is not as clean as the ads.

Has anyone bought one lately? Price? I have a Traulsen 48URSDT from 1990 (back then it had an icemaker... today's model does not). I'd swear it was the prototyped for the Sub-Zero Pro. The freezer compressor is about to go out and rather than start down the path of continuous repairs - I'm considering replacing with this puppy.

I purchased the Pro48 back in '06 when they first hit the market. Was told I was one of the 1st on the East coast to obtain one (back-up orders for the West Coast). During delivery (special truck needed) the frame was was damaged due to too tight of belt used by delivery department. Needless to say, a new one was sent (from the West Coast) the following week. Although my husband thought I was crazy for wanting to spend $12K on a frig (went with GE top of the line appliances to offset cost)I am still in love with it. Its the focal point of my kitchen. Only down side is that my diamond ring scratched the door when opening and I still cringe when my 5 & 8 year old slam the door.

we just bought a maytag side by side 26.7 cu ft. for $800.00 after rebates. it does everything this does and it came in stainless steel for a few hundred more.
if you think this will keep your food colder, fresher, and longer, you should spend the $12,000.00 for it, or contact me and i'll sell you my maytag for only $5,000.00 and have it delivered free.

Until I saw this Fridge I thought the Liebherr from Germany was the ultimate - I too live in a country where 240 Volts is used so I guess we cannot use this Fridge here. it is a thing of real beauty and something I'd be very happy to own. Further refrigerator decisions

no idea why that posted twice, but anyway .... as mentioned, we have bought a fridge called Jenn-Air Alaska, 40 inches wide, counter depth fridge freezer, with no ice and water. Anyway, as it is a panel front unit, I have researched modeling it after the sub-zero. I can buy similar hinges that are around 6 inches long and can have doors fabricated locally that will look that part. Obviously it won't have the drawers beneath but you can't have everything! In addition, because we have an opening big enough, and because I am not a big fan of these units with their different width doors, we are adding a wine fridge to the left, next to the freezer door. I tried to find a wine fridge that was only 450 (18 inches) wide, but no luck. other than making one, which is possible but extremely unlikely, we will opt for either a 600 wide (2 ft.) unit or get a commercial drinks fridge modified to suit. A comm. fridge builder we know has confirmed this is fairly straightforward and inexpensive. As we have to make a door anyway ,we can at least use the triple glazed panel and just add a stainless frame. I know it sounds like a LOT of work, but it will be worthwhile I reckon. being a kitchen designer, I need to display skills and this will do nicely....and be deductible.

So I see from west coast to east coast a sub-zero price for the same model can vary by, it appears, $6000?!!! I can't get dealers to be straight with me on the phone, they just want me to come in. I just want a good ball park figure for a 632 on the west coast. Live in Wa State but willing to drive the truck and pick up. Can ANYONE be straight about what to figure in my budget without having to go into a store and listen to the speel?

I had never heard of Sub Zero and bumped into one yesterday at the Miele Kitchenshop in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Europe. Between $12 and $13,000 in the USA. How about $36,800 in The Netherlands, Europe. I think I will wait a bit longer.

When we bought our house 2 years ago the owner told us that she had remodeled the kitchen. When we looked around we saw 20 year old tile counters, 60 year old cabinets... and the Pro 48 fridge.

I must say that I now understand what she was saying. this 'fridge makes the room. It works great, provides feedback including sounding an alarm if you leave a door even slightly ajar, and gives you precise control over the temperature.

The only problem is that it pretty much required a kitchen remodel for the room to look like it deserves to hold such a work of art. So for us, the $14k will turn into $114k ...

Size perspective

Several comments were arguing that Pro 48 is extremely large.

We just baught one and it appears to be sized just right. It is true that the weight is way up and it required a large team to move it around. However, the interior size is not huge. Our previous refrigerator had an interior volume of 18.5 cubic feet. The Sub zero Pro 48 interior is 28.5 cubic feet. This is larger indeed but huge? Not in our opinion. For one thing, our previous refrigerator could not fit pizza boxes, could not hold medium sized pans and we were always in space shortage in the fridge, even if we don't cook a lot (just two people in the house). It even did not make ice, feature for which we were almost ready to buy an ice maker.

People complaining about the size of the Pro 48 did not notice that this is a counterdepth unit allowing for extremely easy access to its interior. We looked at a variety of fridges in stores like Sears/Home Depot and for an equivalent interior volume, they all posed serious problems of access into and around our kitchen. Not this unit. Please note that there are no door shelves and the access to the interior is extremely easy. Also, it does not interfere (when opening the doors) with neighboring cabinets. We have friends who bought cheaper but bigger fridges and had to surrenter even bigger kitchen space to accomodate them. In some instances, the extra space required was probably double of what the sub zero took from our space. In one case, the fridge was so big that it needed to be placed in a corner at 45 degrees effectively dwarfing everything else around it.

Even the energy efficiency is an interesting question. Our old fridge, manufactured in 1999 (Kenmore model 48042) uses 777 Kwh per year. It is interesting to note that Zub zero 48 pro uses only 685 Kwh/year, has about 30% larger interior space and makes ice too. For comparison with the car purchase opinions, all the new cars available for sale today, and having the interior available space and features similar to our old car are at least 25% less fuel efficient. This means twenty five per cent or more less fuel efficient! I am really serious about this: if there was a car offering the features we like in our old and still running strong wagon, and having comparable fuel efficiency, we will buy two, effective immediately. To buy one that is less efficient? To buy something else, lacking the features that we learned to appreciate and helped us save money in a variety of ways over the years?

Now, it may be true that other new fridges are significantly more efficient. However, I am not sure how those calculations were made. Just the fact that the Sub zero has 6 separate doors/drawers makes me more confortable to reach inside knowing that I am not opening a huge door exposing the milk and everything else when I just need the carrots. I am afraid that sub zero is more efficient than actually advertised, precisely because of the individually accessible compartments.

It seems to me that someone in this company trully designed a fridge that connects with people providing features that are convincing. It is interesting that not even the Sub-zero customer service is aware of the capabilities of this unit. I called today to ask if the sliding stainless steel bins (pans) can be used for cooking and they told me it is not recommended. And yet, in their press release in May 2005 they mentioned that you can marinate the meat in the pans, keep it in the fridge, transfer the pans into the oven, cook, and (I assume) when it is cold enough slide it back into the fridge. That is a feature that they should know about! (Has anyone cleaned cooking pans just because there isnt much space into the fridge and everything needs to be transfered into plastic containers? Then clean the plastic containers? Then clean the smaller plastic containers?)

The price is indeed high. However, I am not aware of any car at this price range that would make me feel happy about the purchase. Not even the very expensive cars would not make me happy because they lack on features I want and excell mostly on good looks and shear power. This fridge just happends to be beautiful, heavy and pricey. It is much more than that while the existing new cars are only beautiful (some), heavy and pricey.

I too had one of the first 48PROG in the fall of 2006 on the east coast ... for about $12,300. Two years and 3 months later it stopped dead. Subzero sent techs, replaced circuit boards and tried to fire it up again. It did not respond. Although technically outside of the 2 year everything warranty, they replaced it, installed it and sent the dead one back for an autopsy. Cost me nothing but 2 weeks of inconvenience. Anyone have similar issues?

I love my 48. Have 4 kids and entertain ALOT. My kids, their friends and party guests would always end up wearing out the plastic parts in our other other fridges.

In our newest home I told hubby about the Pro 48. He thought I was crazy (price). He saw it in person and fell in love as I had already done online.

We are both avid cooks and often feed many people at once. We have a 6 burner Wolf cooktop with a flat grill and the 48 was the perfect complement to our "entertainers" kitchen.

Price Fixing???

The SubZero showroom told us the "suggested" price for Pro45 stainless steel door was $16,100. They said dealers' prices would differ but the dealers tell us they are forced by SZ to charge $16,100. Isn't that illegal price fixing? Anyone have any info on dealers that sell lower than "suggested"? We are in Phoenix area. lisa@the3dstudio.com

i have had the Pro 48 for the past 2 months since I redid my kitchen, and I love it. It goes perfectly with my pro-style 60-inch Wold range. With 5 kids, we use up just about every inch of it. Looks so high end!

I have a Traulson Dual Temp 48 inch. I love how it looks and we use every available inch. I don't love that it sounds like an excavator. It is so loud. I'm wondering if the SubZero Pro48, is quieter. SubZero did copy Traulson, but the price tag is more affordable than the Traulson version, which retails at around $29,000. It is easier to get trade prices on these, though.

I am ready for a new 48" SZ, after knowing the one in my kitchen was installed in 1985. I think I got my 'moneys worth', and can't wait to start shopping. It is still working great, a little noisy and I know is using a ton of energy.

I thought I'd mention that we have a Wolf 60" Dual Fuel Range and a Sub Zero Pro 48 Refrigerator/Freezer for sale! They were installed in the house for 3-4 months but divorce caused the house to be sold and now the appliances. they both have 2-3 years of parts warranty left. We are asking $9500 each or if you purchase both we'll do a pkg price of $17,500. Obviously well below retail on both. We just want to end this chapter of our lives. thank you to sub zero for NOT puting an ice dispenser on the outside of the door. that would have killed the whole point of the design.
nobody talks about which one they like better, the one with the glass door or the solid door. please comment which one is more beautiful to you.

SZ'S the BEST. We installed this beauty in 2000 when we build our log home. Never failed. It would be 10 years in May. We are planning to sell our house this spring and build a new one. I would like to have the PRO 48 installed in our new home. Many thanks for the engineers who designed them.

We have a SZ from 1989 and just bought the pro48 with the glass door. My old one STILL works fine but we are remodeling and fell in love with this beauty! We live in N.Y. and paid $16,800 without tax and delivery so they are a bit of money.Can't wait to get it though!! The door illuminates at night and acts as a night light - my kids loved that part!! Would like to know if anyone would want our old one for maybe parts or just an extra fridge.... it is in excellent condition still.
