Garden design winners at Chelsea 2004

Landscape designers from around the world compete at the Chelsea Flower Show in London
The Chelsea Flower Show is the premier garden show in the United Kingdom and features talented landscape and garden designers from around the world. Designs are showcased in a series of garden categories, and landscapers take the opportunity to show off inventive ideas and to highlight everything from sustainability to low-allergy gardening.

Best Show Garden

"This is a modern garden inspired by the tradition of enclosed gardens such as the early Islamic gardens. Historically the enclosed garden was a reaction to its setting. In contrast to the barren landscape by which it was surrounded it brought shade, water, planting and order."

Designer: Christopher Bradley-Hole
Sponsor: His Highness Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al-Nahyan
Contractor: Steven Swatton

Best Chic Garden

"The garden blends heritage materials such as reclaimed Welsh slate and aged zinc with contrasting modern material such as Perspex. The cool, calming backdrop of the slate clad walls is enhanced by the sound of water trickling over a sheet of vibrant purple Perspex at the rear of the garden. A serpentine stainless steel bench is set on a central dais surrounded by a moat of crushed purple Perspex."

Designers: Emmeline Johnston & Chris Bourne
Sponsors: Adrian Hall, Eclipse Lighting, Wyevale East
Contractor: Patios, Pots & Pergolas

Best City Garden

"A garden for watching wind and appreciating the elements of nature, combining traditional Japanese gardening aesthetics with modern 21st century design. The four fundamental elements of a Japanese garden - water, stones, plants and the senses - are incorporated alongside contemporary materials, including a stainless steel mirror to reflect light and the movement of the plants in the wind."

Designer: Yano Tea
Sponsor: Dragon Gate (Ryu Mon En), Daichi Co Ltd
Contractors: Dragon Gate (Ryu Mon En), Lawn Order

Best Courtyard Garden

"The garden depicts an area formerly lawn which was very labour intensive and ecologically unsound. Over the years the owner has replaced the lawn with more ornamental species of grass which do not require cutting, feeding or all those other intensive tasks, or involve the use of inorganic chemicals. The garden is now environmentally friendly and consists of materials which are all either from sustainable sources or are reclaimed, re-used or recycled."

Designers: Stephen Firth
Contractor: Chichester College

Best Sunflower Street Garden

"This is a classic Sussex countryside cottage garden, which combines plants and materials typical of the chalk downs."

Designer: Paul Stone
Contractor: Paul Stone Gardens
